Shipping Tips in Bonita Beach

Shipping and storage often go together. The Shipping Tips page will give you some good ideas for shipping. There are also some links to a number of shipping companies.

Some of our customers choose to ship their belongings rather than hauling them. Snowbirds will often ship their belongings to Florida and have us put them in their storage unit. That way they don't have to haul them in their automobile or cart them onto the airplane and everything is waiting for them when they get here. Heavy books can be inexpensive to ship using the U.S. Postal Service Media Mail rates. A small number of boxes may be cheaper to ship than using a mover.

The Right Box

Shipping requires the right box that will hold up to the demands placed on it by the shipping companies. You want your belongings to be protected and not have the box crush or burst open while it is being shipped. A quality corrugated box offers good protection. Thin boxes such as copy paper come in or paper board boxes like a shoe box don't usually offer enough protection. Don't exceed the weight limit listed on the box.

Good Packing

Once you have selected the correct box, you need to pack it properly. Bubble wrap® or crumpled wrapping paper can make a nice nest to put your items into. Fragile items should be wrapped individually. Fill any voids in the box with packing material to prevent movement while shipping. Unwanted movement is the main cause of damage during shipping. Once your box is packed, give it a shake. If you hear movement, add some more packing material. Remove batteries from any battery operated item and wrap the batteries separately.

Seal The Box

The box should be well sealed. Glass-reinforced tape will improve the strength of the box. Seal all the seams with packing tape. We sell self adhesive paper tape that seals well and is easy to tear without a knife or scissors. Make sure there are no loose edges or things that could snag on the automated shipping machinery.

Each package needs a good label. Make sure the address is complete including a unit number or apartment number if that applies. Don't forget to include a return address. A good idea is to include a label inside the box should the outside label get damaged or accidentally removed. The side of the box may be a better location than the top of the box or over a seam. Covering the label with clear packing tape can help keep it attached and prevent smudging or running of the ink from water or moisture.

Choose a Shipping Carrier

Your neighborhood shipping store is usually the most convenient. But they usually add a fee onto the shipping charge. Check out the shipper's websites. There are usually tools to calculate shipping costs. With a credit card you can usually schedule a shipment and arrange for the shipment to be picked up at your location. This may be more economical than your neighborhood shipping store.

Additional services are available from most shippers. These can include insurance and delivery confirmation. Some shipping websites allow you to track your package at no charge. Some will send you a delivery confirmation for an extra fee. Insurance is usually extra but some shippers will include the first $100 of insurance at no extra charge. Calculating insurance costs is usually easy at most shippers’ web site.

Shipping Limits

Each carrier has different limits for weights and dimensions. The best place to find these shipping limits is the carrier's website. Length plus girth is usually the number you need. Girth is the measurement around the package (2 times the height plus 2 times the width). Length is the longest side of the package.

DHL length plus girth must not exceed 165 inches (maximum length is 108 inches). Shipping weight that exceeds 150 lbs may have additional surcharges.

Fed Ex Ground length plus girth must not exceed 130 inches. Shipping weight must not exceed 150 lbs. Fed Ex Home Delivery has a weight limit of 70 lbs.

UPS length plus girth must not exceed 156 inches (maximum length is 108 inches). Shipping weight must not exceed 150 lbs.
USPS Parcel Post length plus girth must not exceed 130 inches. Shipping weight must not exceed 70 pounds.
USPS other services length plus girth must not exceed 108 inches. Shipping weight must not exceed 70 pounds.
